About Soteria
Soteria is a secure data and analysis enclave for conducting research with protected data including Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI). It allows researchers to efficiently perform data analysis and provide required visibility, logs, and metrics to institutional entities for meeting security and compliance requirements while facilitating collaboration among research teams with different skills no matter where they are based.
It allows individual and research teams to efficiently organize and analyze protected data while providing the required visibility, logs, and metrics to institutional entities to satisfy compliance requirements.
Named after the Greek goddess of safety, Soteria fosters responsible data stewardship by providing integrated computational infrastructure and managed services, collectively following compliance protocols associated with research projects involving PII and PHI data. The innovative hybrid platform gives researchers the option of operating onsite or in the cloud while fully protecting data either way. Soteria satisfies all current IRB, HIPAA, and RIA guidelines, including NIH genomic data guidelines, and will continue to evolve to meet ever-changing compliance standards.
Data lifecycle
Soteria is a fully compliant platform that supports the entire data lifecycle for projects involving PII and PHI. It facilitates the data process from acquisition and analysis through archiving and purging, logging each milestone to make adhering to compliance requirements simple.
Funding Acknowledgement
Soteria was created with funding from the University of Arizona Health Sciences 5.3 Strategic Initiatives plan. The plan includes three years of support for Soteria, with a goal of the platform becoming self-sustainable within that time. During this three-year period, access to Soteria and its research tools is covered for UArizona research teams.
The Future of Soteria
A robust data enclave, Soteria serves the needs of UArizona research teams that work with protected data. Additional research tools and expanded capabilities are on the horizon that will further solidify Soteria as an indispensable component of data research and provide our investigators with a competitive edge for new funding opportunities.
Our Team
Soteria is developed under the direction of Nirav Merchant, Director of the Data Science Institute. Senior Director for Research Technologies Jeremy Frumkin and his team have been instrumental in building Soteria’s secure infrastructure. A project of this scale requires collaboration among multiple departments and the specialized skills of many UArizona professionals.
University Partners
Soteria is a joint venture between dedicated University of Arizona institutes, offices, centers, and colleges. Many of Soteria’s ground-breaking research tools, including Posit Health Connect, CyVerse Health, and Soteria High Performance Computing, are managed by DSI, CB2, and UITS.
